Redeemer EP - Funeral Lakes

With their new EP Redeemer, Funeral Lakes bring us a splash of familiar sounds, interpreted in new ways you might want to use for your next road trip.

Funeral Lakes is a musical duo, consisting of Chris Hemer (he/him) and Sam Mishos (she/her) which started in spring of 2018. They are currently based out of Kingston, Ontario (Canada), a small city on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.

Today we are celebrating with them the release of their second EP Redeemer. It creates the follow up to last year’s Golden Season EP and their 2019 self-titled debut album.

Redeemer was self-recorded at the duo’s home in Kingston during the winter months of 2021. Colin Spratt mixed and mastered the EP, while Andrew McLeod (Sunnsetter) provided remote drumming on the tracks Solstice and Place I Stay.

In Redeemer the two musicians explore the powers of storytelling in their songs that have a clear influence of folk but cannot be fitted exactly into this genre. Rather, the EP’s four songs rotate between further tendencies of dream pop and indie and match each other’s vibes coherently with a controlled, neatly played guitar.

While the sounds on each track are quite similar, fine differences make each one unique in instrumentals and vocals. This also occurs when giving a glance at other artists, where Funeral Lakes could be seen as a more emotional and calm interpretation of Of Monster and Men and in some ways also reminds one of the New York based band Beach Fossils.

There are two main questions to be asked on this musical piece: Who gets to grant forgiveness? And what does it mean to be irredeemable?

Funeral Lakes describe Redeemer as an EP which “explores the meanings of faith and justice, interrogating the tension between them. Grappling with memory and legacy, it is a reflection on choosing what to hold onto and what to let go of.”

If you want to know more about the band, you can have a look on their webpage here, or simply go to listen to their songs on Spotify (and don’t forget to save their EP to your library!)
